Consider this - Africa takes in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, all different in themselves, but vastly different to Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya, which are themselves different to South Africa.

We must add to this list, the offshore islands of Zanzibar, and perhaps The Seychelles, and Mauritius, although it would be easy to argue they belong to The Indian Ocean, and wouldn't qualify as somewhere to go for an Africa Vacation.

I’ve been to Mauritius to escape the English winter, this was some years ago, when there were winters. We went in March, and spent a fortune. One of my female employees went to Cyprus at the same time. She came home with an incredible tan, and we didn’t because there was little sun in Mauritius, because we were in the area of influence of a tropical depression which sat offshore during our entire stay!!

We stayed in the Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta in Mexico with our children who are aged 9 and 12. I had first heard about the Grand Mayan, because a colleague said it was one of the great honeymoon spots in Mexico, but when he had been there, he said it would make a perfect 5 star family vacation, one of the good family vacation spots in Mexico, because of the number of things for kids to do.

To an increasing number of people who seek isolation, privacy, and exclusivity, the place to go are the tiny Venezuelan islands of Los Roques.

The Venezuelan islands of Los Roques are the most southern islands in the Caribbean, and they are not the easiest place to get to, which is why they are becoming the exclusive hideaway of the rich and famous.

 

To get there you need to fly from Caracas, in a small plane, probably a ten seater propeller plane, and so you get the chance to clearly see what is so attractive about Los Roques.

 

The sea is so shallow, it looks like turquoise glass from the plane, with several islands sticking out of this perfect sea, some absolutely tiny.

 

The aircraft lands on Gran Roque, on a very dusty airstrip, no real formalities or help here, you pick up your bags yourself, and literally within a couple of minutes you can be in your accommodation.

The first thing that will strike you is

Guadeloupe is shaped like a butterfly, two wings with a small body in between, and the two wings of the island are as different as chalk from cheese. One suffers from mass tourism, and the other is very mountainous.

 

The mountainous side is called rather strangely Basse-Terre, and at the southern end is a volcano La Soufriere.

Quite high up on the mountain you will find Le Jardin Malanga, a very nice very small Inn type retreat with breathtaking views of the sea.

 

The building is a beautifully restored Creole plantation house dating from the 1920’s owned and run Joel & Anicette who are quite delightful.

The rooms are several chalets in the grounds, split into two units, all very attractive in dark wood with air conditioning and fans.
