A Luxury Family Vacation to Mauritius is a dream for many people, and if you choose Le Prince Maurice then you won’t be disappointed. As a family our family vacation idea was in fact La Belle Mare Plage in August 2008. We chose it because they offered us a fantastic deal, but when we arrived at the airport no awaiting vehicle, and although the hotel were expecting us, we hung around for an hour before the Manager came up and apologised, saying our suites had been damaged, and would we mind if they upgraded us to Le Prince Maurice their sister hotel, where we would have two suites and not a suite and an adjoining room.

I’ve been to Mauritius to escape the English winter, this was some years ago, when there were winters. We went in March, and spent a fortune. One of my female employees went to Cyprus at the same time. She came home with an incredible tan, and we didn’t because there was little sun in Mauritius, because we were in the area of influence of a tropical depression which sat offshore during our entire stay!!

 

It was a steep learning curve, because we assumed the best time to go to Mauritius was in our European winter, and now I know this to be..........

We stayed in the Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta in Mexico with our children who are aged 9 and 12. I had first heard about the Grand Mayan, because a colleague said it was one of the great honeymoon spots in Mexico, but when he had been there, he said it would make a perfect 5 star family vacation, one of the good family vacation spots in Mexico, because of the number of things for kids to do.

So we read several Grand Mayan NuevoVallarta reviews and......

To an increasing number of people who seek isolation, privacy, and exclusivity, the place to go are the tiny Venezuelan islands of Los Roques.

The Venezuelan islands of Los Roques are the most southern islands in the Caribbean, and they are not the easiest place to get to, which is why they are becoming the exclusive hideaway of the rich and famous.

 

To get there you need to fly from Caracas, in a small plane, probably a ten seater propeller plane, and so you get the chance to clearly see what is so attractive about Los Roques.

 

The sea is so shallow, it looks like turquoise glass from the plane, with several islands sticking out of this perfect sea, some absolutely tiny.

 

The aircraft lands on Gran Roque, on a very dusty airstrip, no real formalities or help here, you pick up your bags yourself, and literally within a couple of minutes you can be in your accommodation.

The first thing that will strike you is

Guadeloupe is shaped like a butterfly, two wings with a small body in between, and the two wings of the island are as different as chalk from cheese. One suffers from mass tourism, and the other is very mountainous.

 

The mountainous side is called rather strangely Basse-Terre, and at the southern end is a volcano La Soufriere.

Quite high up on the mountain you will find Le Jardin Malanga, a very nice very small Inn type retreat with breathtaking views of the sea.

 

The building is a beautifully restored Creole plantation house dating from the 1920’s owned and run Joel & Anicette who are quite delightful.

The rooms are several chalets in the grounds, split into two units, all very attractive in dark wood with air conditioning and fans.

 

The day’s menu....................

The Islands of Les Saintes is part of what I would call the affordable Caribbean with a wonderful small hotel called Hotel Auberge Les Petit Saints.

 

It is a small group of islands off the south coast of Guadeloupe and is easily reached by ferryboat from Trois-Rivieres, or Pointe-a-Pitre, or alternatively you can fly in if you are feeling flush!!

 

This  main islands in this archipelago consist of  Terre-de-Haut, and Terre-de-Bas, which are amongst the most beautiful Caribbean islands. They are very much French, despite being the scene of a dramatic naval battle in the 18^th century won by the English. In fact it would be fair to say that the islands are not so much French but Breton, probably because many French sailors came from Brittany two hundred years ago.

 

The restaurants...................

The most romantic hotel in Sri Lanka is undoubtedly Taprobane Island, and you must take the opportunity to stay there for a few days during your vacation in Sri Lanka.

Taprobane is an amazing place, and incredibly romantic, not the least of its charms is that you can only get to it by wading through the sea.

The 2.5 acre island has 5 en-suite bedrooms with good size living areas, balconies, verandahs, lovely tropical gardens, and of course an infinity pool. There is a staff of five who only exist to pander to your every whim

Barbados has superb beaches, top class hotels and restaurants, and the best sunshine record in the Caribbean.

Its west coast has the fine beaches, warm Caribbean Sea, and many luxury hotels and villas. The east coast is far more rugged facing the Atlantic Ocean, with cliffs and coves, but is not so spoiled by mass tourism.

Hemingways is a 74 room resort Hotel overlooking the stunning beach of Watamu Marine Park, 20 miles south of Malindi and 60 miles north of Mombasa.

 

The hotel has a distinctive exclusive, and sophisticated feel about it and is definitely for the more discerning traveller seeking quality, and peace and quiet. You won’t find much entertainment in the evenings apart from live lounge music in the restaurant twice a week and a snake charmer on one occasion in the bar.

 

This is a privately owned hotel, and given the chance to stay, I would take it with both hands. Privately owned hotels are by and large friendlier, and Hemingways has all the facilities and standards of an international five star resort.

When you add to that absolutely brilliant cuisine, the old fashioned courtesy of the staff, with attentive service, and the backdrop of ............................

The Indian Ocean Beach Club is located  on a powder white sand beach south of Mombasa, and surrounded by swaying coconut palm groves, and old baobabs.

It isn’t the kind of hotel that is all too popular nowadays, all singing all dancing, disco, high rise, bland, huge, the could be anywhere type of place.

The Indian Ocean Beach Club has been built to attract honeymooners, and romantics, and to recreate a sadly bygone age where service and opulence reigned.
