How do I get to the Windamere Hotel Darjeeling

You really have two main choices, the first of which is to fly into Calcutta[Kolkata] and then take an internal flight to Bagdogra, and then by taxi or shared jeep.

The second, and far more romantic is to take the train from Kolkata to new Jalpaiguri[NJP] also near Siliguri. The night train is recommended as an experience to remember all your life. You then catch the Toy Train which is the famous Darjeeling Himalayan railway up to Darjeeling. The journey up the hill is one of the most scenic journeys imaginable and is a must on any alternative unusual honeymoon trip.

The Heritage Wing has 16 suites and a Honeymoon Cottage

If you need the 21st century then the Little Welcome is more modern with TV and telephone. There are 17 rooms here, 7 standard, and 10 superior.

Things to Do Whilst Staying at the Windamere Hotel

Apart from the obvious which is to walk around the hustle and bustle of Darjeeling, there are things you must see.

First and foremost is to get up before dawn, which may be 3.00 in the morning and climb up to 8500 ft.  Tiger Hill to see dawn break over Kangchenjunga and to get a distant sight of Mount Everest. You will find it enormously moving, and wrap up well, and remember not one of your friends will ever experience this because you took one of the more unusual honeymoon destinations. By the way, stay outside, it might be freezing cold

A great full day activity is to get a jeep to Ghoom, which is further up the ridge, and visit some of the monasteries there, then walk back to Darjeeling through some of the villages.

Go to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute founded by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.

There is a lot to do, but don't forget the tea, not only the estates but also the product!!
