Destinations
_________________________________________________
Unusual Honeymoon Destinations in October.
Forget the Caribbean, forget a safari, choose one of the great alternative honeymoon destinations and go to
the Windamere Hotel Darjeeling India.
Be different, and read why you should take this honeymoon trip in this article. By the way Darjeeling is also
one of the great honeymoon destinations in April.
October and April falls in the periods in the year outside the rains, and the really cold times in the winter,
or wet heat in the summer.
Why the Windamere Hotel ?
Firstly because of the fact it is in Darjeeling a hill station from the time of the British Raj, when it was a
cool escape in the hills away from the oppressive heat of the Indian Summer. So you will be visiting a piece of
history, 6800 feet above sea level and be surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Himalayas .
Secondly because the Windamere Hotel Darjeeling itself is a real preserved Victorian hotel. originally
built as a bachelor boarding house for young British tea planters around 150 years ago, and converted to a
hotel in 1939. It simply reeks of history.
What is the Windamere Hotel Darjeeling Like?
If you weren't in India, and you could shut out the hustle and bustle of Darjeeling which is spread out below
you, then you could be in England 75 years ago.
There is everything from coal fires in your bedroom, hot water bottles in your beds, afternoon tea with cucumber
sandwiches, and no crusts, and even roast beef for Sunday lunch!!
All of this backed up by old fashioned and attentive starched linen white gloved service, and an atmosphere of
an English Country House weekend.
Everyhting makes the Windamere Hotel Darjeeling unique, a colonial outpost and one of the really unique honeymoon
destinations.

How do I get to the Windamere Hotel Darjeeling
As much as the destination Darjeeling is lovely, travel should be an adventure, and this is part of what makes it
one of the great alternative honeymoon destinations.
You really have two main choices, the first of which is to fly into Calcutta[Kolkata] and then take an internal
flight to Bagdogra, and then by taxi or shared jeep.
The second, and far more romantic is to take the train from Kolkata to new Jalpaiguri[NJP] also near
Siliguri. The night train is recommended as an experience to remember all your life. You then catch the Toy
Train which is the famous Darjeeling Himalayan railway up to Darjeeling. The journey up the hill is one of the most
scenic journeys imaginable and is a must on any alternative unusual honeymoon trip.
Accommodation at the Windamere Hotel
Best described as an oasis of old fashioned comfort, the accommodation at the Windamere Hotel splits into two
wings
The Welcome Heritage which is based in the main house called the Villa, is what Europeans would call
unmodernised. However if you are here because the history of the Windamere Hotel is what has
attracted you, then choose your room here. The rooms are furnished with chintz curtains and are typically
colonial with no TV or telephone, but roaring coal fires in the cold evenings. The Heritage Wing has 16 suites and
a Honeymoon Cottage
If you need the 21st century then the Little Welcome is more modern with TV and telephone. There are 17 rooms
here, 7 standard, and 10 superior.
Things to Do Whilst Staying at the Windamere Hotel
Apart from the obvious which is to walk around the hustle and bustle of Darjeeling, there are things you must
see.
First and foremost is to get up before dawn, which may be 3.00 in the morning and climb up to 8500 ft.
Tiger Hill to see dawn break over Kangchenjunga and to get a distant sight of Mount Everest. You will find it
enormously moving, and wrap up well, and remember not one of your friends will ever experience this because you
took one of the more unusual honeymoon destinations. By the way, stay outside, it might be freezing cold
A great full day activity is to get a jeep to Ghoom, which is further up the ridge, and visit some of the
monasteries there, then walk back to Darjeeling through some of the villages.
Go to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute founded by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
There is a lot to do, but don't forget the tea, not only the estates but also the product!!
Best Bits of the Windamere Hotel Darjeeling.
It just has to be the old fashioned service, the coal fires and hot water bottles. You can't forget the so
terribly Englishness of the place, from the afternoon tea, to the Roast beed Sunday lunch.
Quite unforgettable are the views from the gardens. Looking down from Observatory Hill onto Darjeeling or up to
Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain on earth, and sometimes you are above cloud level so Darjeeling is hidden
but the mountain crystal clear.
Conclusion
You will need to be bold to take one of the more unusual honeymoon destinations at the Windamere Hotel
Darjeeling. You will however have an experience to treasure, from the journey, to the hotel, to the things you will
see and experience. It will be so much more fulfilling than two weeks in a five star hotel on a beach.
